Shower Screen & Enclosure Replacement
Replacing an old, damaged or unsuitable shower screen? Send photographs of the complete installation and the proposed new product before ordering. SSI can compare the existing tray, finished opening, adjustment range, door movement and likely fitting footprint before arranging removal and installation.

Damage, Age, Condition or a Shower That No Longer Works Well
Some enclosures fail suddenly. Others become increasingly difficult to clean, operate or keep aligned. Replacement may also be chosen because the original style no longer suits the bathroom or the way it is used.
Damage or instability
Cracked or chipped glass, bent profiles, broken tracks, loose panels, failed hinges, worn pivots or components that no longer retain the glass securely.
Age and condition
Heavy corrosion, degraded finishes, mould inside inaccessible frame sections, permanent limescale, worn seals throughout the unit or repeated misalignment.
Poor original choice
A narrow entrance, awkward door swing, unsuitable handing, inconvenient slider overlap, poor water control or a product installed outside its intended adjustment range.
Appearance and upgrade
Changing finish, replacing a heavily framed enclosure, improving access or moving to a different door or screen style while retaining a sound tray and bathroom.
Repair Can Be Sensible—But SSI Primarily Replaces Complete Screens
A genuine part can be worthwhile where the manufacturer and model are known, the enclosure remains in good condition and the correct component is readily available. For older, unidentified or repeatedly failing products, complete replacement often provides better long-term value.
SSI does not normally undertake standalone visits solely to identify or replace generic seals, rollers or small unidentified parts. Customers with an identifiable MERLYN, Lakes, Matki, Kudos or other premium enclosure should normally contact the manufacturer first for genuine parts and warranty options.
SSI may fit a replacement component where
- The customer has identified and obtained the correct manufacturer part
- The existing enclosure remains suitable and worth repairing
- The repair is agreed in advance and represents sensible value
- The work can be completed without rebuilding a worn or corroded enclosure
Screens and Enclosures SSI Can Remove and Replace
The page is focused on off-the-shelf replacement products fitted to an existing sound tray or completed shower area.
Recess doors
Framed hinged, pivot, sliding, bi-fold and infold doors fitted between two finished walls or across a prepared aperture.
Corner and quadrant enclosures
Rectangular, square, offset quadrant and corner-entry enclosures where the existing tray remains suitable.
Fixed walk-in panels
Removal and replacement of fixed panels, supported walk-in glass and suitable panel-and-return arrangements.
Like-for-Like, Similar or a Completely Different Style?
A different enclosure may improve access or appearance, but the further the new design moves away from the old footprint, the more likely it is that historic holes, silicone shadows or previously covered tile areas will be visible.
Do not rely on the headline tray size alone
A product described as 900mm is not guaranteed to match another 900mm enclosure. Send the old installation and proposed product before ordering.
Can the Existing Shower Tray Support a New Enclosure?
SSI is comfortable installing a new enclosure onto an older tray where it remains sound, stable and compatible. A visibly defective tray makes it difficult to provide a meaningful installation-workmanship guarantee.
An older but sound tray
- No visible cracking or movement
- Usable and undamaged fixing edge
- Acceptable level and wall relationship
- Compatible shape and radius for the proposed product
- No obvious failure at the wall-to-tray junction
Conditions that can stop a glass-only replacement
- Cracked or moving tray
- Significant level problem
- Damaged or excessively narrow edge
- Failed wall-to-tray junction
- Incompatible quadrant or offset-quadrant radius
- Signs that the wider shower installation is unstable
Why a Nominal 900mm Replacement May Still Not Fit
Product names are often based on the tray or approximate installation size. The actual working dimensions depend on the manufacturer’s adjustment range and the geometry of the completed bathroom.
Before installation, the proposed replacement should be checked for:
- Minimum and maximum finished-opening range
- Wall-profile width and drilling positions
- Tray shape, corner radius and offset handing
- Door handing, opening direction and clear entrance
- Threshold or track line on the tray
- Product height and nearby bathroom fittings
- Required support and installation conditions
Photographs that make the comparison useful
- Full front view of the enclosure and tray
- Door shown both open and closed
- Close-ups of wall profiles and threshold
- Tray corners, radius and any offset shape
- Nearby basin, toilet, radiator and bathroom door
- Manufacturer label or model details where available
Silicone Lines, Drill Holes and Previously Covered Tile
SSI removes old silicone carefully, prepares the fitting area and seals redundant holes appropriately. It is not always possible to make a long-standing installation disappear without evidence.
Silicone and surface shadows
Old sealant can normally be removed, but embedded residue, mould staining, limescale or a colour difference in tiles that were covered for years may remain visible.
Old fixing holes
Redundant holes may be covered by the new profile or sealed appropriately. A narrower or differently positioned profile may leave some holes visible.
Hidden tile condition
Old frames can conceal chipped drilling points, oversized holes, cracked or missing tile, poor previous repairs and damaged grout or waterproof finishes.
What Happens If the Old Enclosure Was Altered to Fit?
On occasion, removal reveals damaged or missing tile—particularly where the original enclosure was adapted, packed or heavily sealed to make it fit an unsuitable opening.
Small preparation and sealing work may be completed where reasonable. More significant damage, structural concerns or tiling repairs are discussed with the customer before the new product is installed. The route is decided case by case.
Possible outcomes after removal
- Proceed with normal cleaning and installation
- Use the replacement profile to cover suitable historic marks
- Complete minor sealing or preparation within the agreed scope
- Revise the product position where the manufacturer permits
- Pause while tile or tray work is completed by the relevant trade
- Recommend another product if the exposed opening changes the assessment
Let SSI Review the Proposed Enclosure Before You Order
The customer normally sources and purchases the replacement enclosure. SSI can review a proposed product to reduce the risk of an obvious mismatch, but the customer remains responsible for the accuracy, condition, completeness and suitability of the customer-supplied product.
Product and installation details
- Direct product link and manufacturer
- Stated dimensions and adjustment range
- Tray shape, size and radius
- Handing and door movement
- Product height and profile footprint
- Installation instructions and included components
SSI explains the issue before continuing
- Incorrect size or adjustment range
- Wrong handing or incompatible radius
- Damage or missing components
- Outside the manufacturer’s intended conditions
- Unable to reach or be assembled in the bathroom
- Additional attendance or return work may be chargeable
How Shower Screen Replacement Works
Photographs usually provide a strong initial assessment, while the exposed condition is confirmed during removal.
Send the existing enclosure
Share a full front view, door open and closed, tray shape, profiles, damage, proposed replacement and postcode.
Review the proposed product
SSI compares the adjustment range, tray geometry, handing, movement and likely profile footprint.
Agree removal and disposal
The quotation identifies the removal, installation and disposal scope and explains the possibility of concealed conditions.
Remove and assess
Glass, doors, tracks and profiles are controlled during removal before old silicone and fixing areas are assessed.
Install the suitable replacement
The new enclosure is assembled, fixed, aligned, checked and sealed in accordance with its manufacturer’s instructions.
Handover and dispose
SSI demonstrates operation, confirms cure guidance, allows inspection and removes the old enclosure where agreed.
How Long Does Shower Screen Replacement Take?
Times depend on old silicone, product complexity, drilling surfaces, alignment, access and what becomes visible after removal.
Simple fixed panel
Removal and replacement where the old and new fitting conditions are straightforward.
Recess shower door
Typical hinged, pivot, sliding or folding door replacement across a prepared opening.
Quadrant or corner enclosure
Complete removal, assembly, adjustment and sealing of a multi-part manufactured enclosure.
A Replacement Is Also an Assessment of What the Old Frame Covered
The before photograph helps compare the original footprint. The after photograph shows the completed replacement and any visible historic areas.

Frequently Asked Questions
These answers explain compatibility, retained trays, historical marks and responsibility for customer-supplied products.
Can a shower enclosure be replaced without changing the tray?
Yes, where the existing tray remains sound, stable, acceptably level and compatible with the proposed product. Cracks, movement, damaged edges, failed wall junctions or an incompatible quadrant radius may require another route.
Should I buy the replacement before contacting SSI?
No. Send photographs and the proposed product link first. SSI can review the adjustment range, tray shape, handing, door movement and likely profile footprint before you order.
Does SSI supply the replacement enclosure?
The customer normally sources and purchases the replacement product. SSI can review a proposed enclosure before purchase, but the customer remains responsible for the accuracy and suitability of a customer-supplied product.
Will a new 900mm enclosure replace any old 900mm enclosure?
No. Nominal size does not confirm adjustment range, tray radius, profile width, drilling positions, threshold line, handing or door movement. The old installation and proposed product must be compared.
Is like-for-like replacement always best?
It often gives the best chance of covering old marks and retaining familiar door movement. It is not automatically best where the old configuration was awkward, unsuitable or no longer available.
Will the new enclosure cover the old drill holes?
It may, particularly where the new wall profiles have a similar or wider footprint. Narrower or differently positioned profiles can leave redundant holes visible. These are sealed appropriately but cannot always be hidden.
Will old silicone marks disappear?
Old silicone is removed carefully and the area is cleaned, but embedded residue, limescale, mould staining, scratches or a colour difference in previously covered tiles may remain visible.
What can be hidden behind an old shower profile?
Removal can reveal chipped or missing tile, oversized holes, damaged grout, heavy silicone, previous repairs or a unit that was altered to fit the opening. Significant issues are discussed before the new product is installed.
Can I change from a full enclosure to a walk-in panel?
Sometimes, but removing the old frames and threshold can expose more historic marks. The new layout also needs a separate assessment of panel length, support and water containment.
Can I change from a pivot door to a sliding or bi-fold door?
Yes where the tray, opening, adjustment range and clearances suit the new product. A different mechanism may improve access but usually changes the profile and threshold footprint.
Does SSI remove and dispose of the old enclosure?
Yes. Controlled removal and disposal can be included and will be identified clearly within the quotation.
What if the old tray moves or is cracked?
A glass-only replacement may be declined or postponed because movement or cracking can undermine the new enclosure and make a workmanship guarantee difficult to provide.
Does SSI replace shower door rollers and seals?
SSI does not normally undertake seal-only, roller-only or unidentified small-parts visits. Customers with an identifiable product should first contact the original manufacturer or a specialist shower-parts supplier.
Can SSI fit a genuine replacement part I already have?
Yes, where the part has been correctly identified, the existing enclosure remains worth repairing and the agreed work represents sensible value.
How long does replacement take?
A simple fixed panel is typically 1–2 hours, a recess door about 2 hours and a quadrant or complete corner enclosure approximately 4–5 hours, subject to condition and complexity.
How soon can the shower be used?
Follow the enclosure or sealant manufacturer’s cure guidance. Where standard sanitary silicone is used, this is commonly around 24 hours unless the manufacturer states otherwise.
